Product Overview
The thinnest clamshell phone on the market - made from anodised aluminium, it's less than 14mm wide but still includes features such as Bluetooth, dual displays, a built-in digital camera and an MPEG4 video player. It's a quad-band phone and uses a mini USB connection for syncing data to your PC or laptop.
The Motorola V3 is the latest clamshell mobile phone from Motorola - an anodised aluminium phone, with exceptional design concepts immediately obvious. Only 14mm wide, the V3 isn't just about style - it still manages to pack cutting-edge features into its diminutive frame. With a crystal clear 176x220 pixel 65k colour main display, and a 4096-colour external display, the V3 continues Motorola's tradition of producing outstanding mobile displays. These come into play when you take into account the VGA-quality integrated digital camera, and the ability to playback MPEG4 video.
Connectivity consists of Bluetooth and miniUSB for short-range communications, and full WAP and Java for internet-based communications. The V3 also sounds as good as it looks, with both polyphonic and MP3 ringtones, and the ability to play back MP3s. With 5.5MB of internal memory, the V3 has plenty of room for all the data or media you wish to store on it.
Quad-band GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz
It might be thin, but the V3 is also well connected with its quad-band GSM radio, capable of working throughout five continents around the globe. With GSM 850 MHz support on top of the standard three bands, connection in the USA becomes much more efficient.
2.2 inch 262,144 colour TFT main LCD, 176 x 220 pixel resolution
At 2.2 inches the main LCD in the V3 is quite comfortable on the eyes and makes for easy reading of WAP pages. It is not the brightest screen in bright locations, but its resolution is high and colour level one of the highest. The screen can display up to eight lines of text, and can show a full SMS on screen without scrolling.
4,096 colour STN sub LCD, 96 x 80 pixel resolution
By having a colour sub LCD on the front of the flip, the V3 is capable of taking self portrait pictures with accuracy. The external screen does also happen to function as a status screen (like most old monochrome screens did!) and displays a row of status icons as well as the current time. Being a passive matrix STN screen its quality is not the best, but as it doesn?t chew battery life like TFT screens it?s more than adequate for the task at hand.
VGA digital still camera with 4x digital zoom
The integrated CMOS digital camera can take pictures at a maximum resolution of 640x480 pixels, and features a 4x digital zoom. Exposure levels and white balance can be adjusted, although JPEG compression quality cannot. Pictures can be taken and directly after be set as a standby screen wallpaper or attached to a new MMS. Approximately 70 VGA size pictures can be stored on the phone when there is no other content stored in memory.
24 tone polyphonic synthesizer
The V3?s synthesiser is quite loud and can be heard in many different places. Melodies sound great with the V3 supporting 24 tone polyphonic ringtones. MP3 is also supported, although mainly for ringtone purposes rather than full songs due to the lack of available memory. A variety of interesting ringtones come preinstalled in the phone. Ringtones can be downloaded through WAP, received via MMS or uploaded from PC using a miniUSB cable or through Bluetooth.
5.5 MB shared internal memory
5.5 megabytes of memory are available for all purposes, such as pictures, ringtones, games and MMS messages. While there is no memory card support, the included internal memory is big enough for practical use in the V3.
Standard Motorola user interface with skin support
The user interface is the same one used in recent Motorola V series phones, including the V300, V525, V600, V620 and V80 phones. The main addition here is skin support. Skins are similar to themes and are packages that customise the colour theme and background wallpapers. There are three themes preinstalled and more are available from Motorola?s WAP portal.
SMS/EMS, MMS, e-mail and instant messaging
All messaging types are supported on the V3, and long SMS can be composed which are broken up into single SMS when sent and recombined when they arrive. MMS supports slides for multiple attachments and slideshows, and e-mail conforms to the IMAP and POP3 protocols. Instant messaging support is in the form of the Wireless Village standard, although this is not supported in Australia just yet.
MiniUSB and Bluetooth wireless connectivity
The V3 has only one single connector on the side of the phone, and this connector happens to be a miniUSB port, which means that a simple miniUSB to USB data cable is all that is necessary to directly connect your phone to your computer, and Motorola have included one in the box. It will even charge your phone for you when hooked up. The other option is to use Bluetooth, which allows for a wireless data connection to a PC or to a wireless headset for talking. Unfortunately there is no infra-red capability in the V3.
Data synchronisation with PC applications
You can connect to your PC using either USB or through Bluetooth if your PC has Bluetooth support. When connected to a PC you can synchronise data as well as transfer multimedia content between your phone and PC, using the included Mobile Phonetools software. Other features such as a phonebook editor and SMS composer are also available.
xHTML browser (WAP 2.0 compliant) over GPRS
While this is fast becoming a standard feature with nearly all phones these days, the V3 has a WAP 2.0 compliant browser which allows for browsing of web pages coded in xHTML, containing pictures, sounds and colour schemes. GPRS is at Class 10, allowing for speedy browsing at up to 48 kbps.
Java (MIDP 2.0) support
Java applications can be run on the V3, and five applications/games are preinstalled on the phone. The included games are not that bad and do their job of killing time whenever necessary. Extra applications and games are available from Motorola?s WAP portal as well as other third party WAP sites. Java programs can also be installed from a PC via the included Mobile Phonetools software.
